Sorry to hear your mother has died. It is important to remember that it is out of love, and the desire to see people have a dignified death, that we sometimes feel as though their passing can't come to soon enough.I know; my husband had cancer and the hospital left it up to me to request his morphine when he was discomforted. I knew the morphine, not the cancer would kill him, but I hastened things as much as I was able, to give him as much dignity in dying as he had in living.
My thoughts are with you but, I have strayed far from my initial reason for contacting you.
When I attended your class, you said you would provide me with a reference to read for a Masters, which I want to do at Leicester University,if I needed one.
Are you still prepared to do this?
Please let me know if you are.
My e-mail is madmonicauk@btinternet.com
Look after yourself.
Best Regards, Monica CarterAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330252847619295621.post-17334461283380884442009-09-07T22:17:40.114+01:002009-09-07T22:17:40.114+01:00The care on Adams ward was the worst we experience...The care on Adams ward was the worst we experienced in the JR. Mum's last stint was in Emergency, where she stayed for nearly two months. Maybe it was because I utterly refused permission for her to be moved to 'another ward' if that ward was Adams which led to her being discharged home. It was the best thing, since she died being cared for by her family and a dedicated team who came in three times a day and were wonderful. The whole experience at the JR - of rotating teams of nurses and invisible doctors - was so upsetting that David and I have resolved to keep out of hospital at all costs, even if it means dying younger.Linda Proudhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07073885390839506137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330252847619295621.post-34782392217531433012009-09-07T16:18:17.284+01:002009-09-07T16:18:17.284+01:00I worked on Adams ward many years ago in the old R...I worked on Adams ward many years ago in the old Radcliffe Infirmary. I am in the process of researching a mystery set in Renaissance Florence and I cannot find (I do not read Italian or Latin)any source that will tell me how members of the middle class, but of good old family, would address each other. Were all men Messer, except those who were Maestro? How would a man address a woman of his own class? An unmarried girl (but not a child)? How would a clerk in the chancery address the Chancellor? Any direction to a source that will elucidate such relationships will be very gratefully received.

Roberta Gellis
http://www.robertagellis.comRoberta Gellishttp://www.robertagellis.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330252847619295621.post-71251920992291441932009-03-19T09:51:00.000+00:002009-03-19T09:51:00.000+00:00Thank you, RR. It may be subliminal, but that comes through in the writing. One of best books I know in the ‘true fiction’ genre is Laurens van der Post’s ‘A Story like the Wind’ – barely a philosophical word in it, but the whole book is irradiated by the sunlight of consciousness and one is transported to ‘be’ that consciousness whilst reading it. That last is a cack-handed way of putting it, and not very advaita-ish, but I think you’ll know what I mean. The book’s a work of fiction, but the impression one gets is that it’s utterly real, utterly honest, utterly alive. I think we’re actually saying the same thing?

Reply from David, posted by LindaLinda Proudhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07073885390839506137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330252847619295621.post-10004164992257945542008-02-13T22:21:00.000+00:002008-02-13T22:21:00.000+00:00I very much like the idea of this genre because fi...I very much like the idea of this genre because fiction is easy and truth is extremely difficult to write. Fiction which embodies and possible partially hides truth is extremely attractive because in my view truth is almost impossible to write in its bareness. even the great scriptures need a deal of unravelling by wise commentators. The idea is to hint at that which lies beyond the worlds of pleasure and righteousness. That needs expression in as many ways as possible. Another purpose is to whet appetites and inspire questions and curiosity.
Comment from Richard Gary, posted by LindaLinda Proudhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07073885390839506137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330252847619295621.post-12419633129108424072008-02-04T15:03:00.000+00:002008-02-04T15:03:00.000+00:00My book is the one that Linda refers to her in thi...My book is the one that Linda refers to her in this blog.

Firstly, I’d like to say a huge heartfelt thank you to her for making me feel good about the fact that my book is a hybrid between commercial and literary fiction.

I received some fairly difficult feedback about my novel last week. Yes, the critic did give me a realistic view of the mainstream publishing world. He also gave me some very constructive comments about my writing style for which I am grateful. But I was left feeling bruised and confused, wondering whether I should strive for the Holy Grail and try to become a truly “literary” writer or whether I should have a go at “sexing up” my existing novel to make it more commercial.

If I chose the commercial route, I was advised that my existing lead character (a sixteenth century male artist), would be “fairly obscure to your average Tesco buyer. The hero is neither a gorgeous woman with some dramatic love challenges to overcome, nor the sort of all-action Tudor James Bond who could drive a more action-oriented narrative.”

I slept badly, trying to reconcile what seemed to me to be devilish choices. Should I go back to my novel and re-work it to make it more commercial? What would that look like? Yes, I suppose I could make the lead female character the heroine. And I could also revamp my quiet, sensitive artist into a dashing action hero who tears off her bodice by the end of Chapter Two (only after a fine bout of swordplay, of course).

But that's not why I wrote the book. I wrote the book because I fell in love with a portrait of a spirited looking woman in the National Gallery and became intrigued by the story behind it.

A week has now passed and I’ve grown to feel proud of Linda and David’s idea of being a hybrid writer. So I am going to stay with that. I might never get to sell in Tesco but then neither do free range chickens.Paulahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15665125035244081538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330252847619295621.post-56574594919867321182008-01-30T19:17:00.000+00:002008-01-30T19:17:00.000+00:00Is it lack of variety or poor marketing (lack of m...Is it lack of variety or poor marketing (lack of money to market)?
